GETTING A HEAD START

IT'S NEVER TOO EARLY

Start preparing for your college tuition bill now, and you’ll thank yourself later.

Check out potential scholarship opportunities.

If you understand what's required, you can make sure you’ll be eligible when the time comes for you to apply. New Visions' annual scholarship guide lists hundreds of scholarships for New York City students.

Start saving.

Consider having a parent or guardian open a 529 college savings plan on your behalf. This is a state-sponsored plan that allows families to deduct up to $10,000 a year from their income taxes for saving for qualified higher education expenses, including tuition and room and board.

Get informed.

Together with a parent or guardian, start checking out the FAFSA planning worksheets each year to familiarize yourself with the documents you’ll need to submit down the line.

Consider your options.

If you are an undocumented immigrant, you might want to start working toward your permanent residency or citizenship now so that more opportunities will be available to you when it comes time to apply for financial aid.

New York City teens talk to student filmmakers from the Academy for Careers in Television and Film about how they plan to pay for college.
